- IMHO, competing head-to-head with PCs on system specs is a rough path.
- Maybe its necessary, maybe its not, I dunno. But even *now* a 060/50
- (which is hard to get) is not a very fast CPU compared to the mid to
- high end Pentiums, and P6s are shipping. By 1997, a 060/50 might as well
- be a 386. Its a very competitive world out there.
-
- If the PPC folks can stay in the performance game, it might give the
- Amiga some hope on that front. But even they've got a tough road to
- follow, just given the relative sizes of the markets. The best thing
- that could happen is for all the PPC based systems (Amiga/Be/Mac/etc) to
- stay healthy, providing an incentive to fund keeping the PPC performance
- competitive (as it is now).
-
- The Amiga clearly has a set of people who will tolerate the machine
- being considerably far off the front of the performance curve, but the
- farther you get from the front, the smaller this set gets. That's why I
- believe the PPC direction is a good move, assuming AT is really
- committed to it and has the wherewithal to make it happen. Its gonna be
- hard - I think doing it be early 97 is an aggressive schedule, yet a
- necessary one.
